As bloggers we are all basically online “buddies” that share their best tips, their most vulnerable moments, and of course their fav products and recipes!

When I first started blogging 3 years ago I struggled to get my blog to “sound” like some of my favorite blogs that I read.

I didn’t feel like I fit into the inner circle of the blogging world. My blog was somehow different, boring, and not inciting at all!

There was something wrong with my wording…I just couldn’t put my finger on it…

Then I realized, I don’t have a voice!

The way that I was blogging and the way that I spoke was like two different things.

This is primarily because we’re taught to write formally while we really speak informally in person. Well, that’s just plain boring–nobody wants to read formal writing (expect for academics of course!).

If you’ve had plenty of eyes on your blog but not much sign ups for your newsletter or comments then maybe it could be your voice.

People need to feel like they know YOU to really get into your blog. They also have to feel like your are uber genuine or else they’ll not come back to your blog.

Here are 5 really good tips on how to connect with your readers on a human level.

1. Speak Like You Would to a Friend

This is the number #1 way to connect with your audience in a real way. You have to blog like you’re talking to a dear friend. I know that this is difficult at first but with practice you can totally do it!

A really great way to get into practice of doing this is to real aloud whatever you write. You can also “speak” your blog post first and transcribe it in a blog post.

2. Come From a Place of Sincerity

You really have to have a burning desire to help and connect with other people. If you’re a blogger solely to make money, you won’t succeed in the long run. People can see straight through the phoniness!

If you really have a desire to help people, it will come through in your blogging.

Also, the only way people can get to know you is by it actually being you! Unless you’re a B2B blog, having ghost writers write all the content for your blog won’t work. Why? Because people aren’t getting to know the real you that’s why.

This isn’t a magazine, it’s a blog remember? So make sure to add plenty of content written by you and not a hired writer.

3. Be Vulnerable

Some of the most popular blogs are also the ones where the authors are the most vulnerable. This is especially hard to do and something that I still struggle with myself.

You have to let people really know about who you are, your struggles, your sadness, your happiness, etc.

Quick tip — people don’t like it when people pretend like they’re perfect. They actually really hate it because it makes them feel bad about themselves. If you show them your struggles and imperfections, they can say, “hey I’ve been through the same thing too!” and really connect with you on a human level.

So screw up and show the world just how messed up you are! Your readers may love you more for it!

4. Write About Things People Want to Read About

This is another lesson I learned when I first started blogging. I would write what I felt like was a wonderful piece and that everyone should love. No one read it.

Then I wrote a silly article on the top 5 reasons men may be avoiding you and people LOVED it!

I then realized that if I wanted to get people to read my blog I had to write about things people actually gave a damn about.

You really have to get over your ego on this one–write what people want to read not what you want to write.

You can come up with ideas by simply asking people or you can research some of the most popular pins in your niche on Pinterest and do a spin on the topics. Go to your favorite blogs and see what type of topics and formats they use.

I’m not saying to copy people but don’t reinvent the wheel. Just do what works!

5. Be Clear on What You’re Writing About — G.T.T.P (Get to the Point!!)

I hate when I’m reading a vague azz blog and I don’t know what the topic is on. Other than super re-used, recycled information there’s nothing that will get me off a blog quicker.

I need to know what your blog is about within 5 seconds of me landing on your blog what you’re all about.

Your blog needs to have a main point, a main focus…

And so does your blog posts.

  • Have an intriguing blog title (this is wayyy more important than you think!)
  • An introductory paragraph that grabs the reader and introduces what you’re doing (are you giving me tips, etc.?)
  • Write your blog post in short scannable sections with headlines and lists

If your blog post is just a ramble on how you had an awesome experience going to the mall last week, that’s a diary post not a blog post! LOL

Give me your experiences? Do you feel like you connect with your readers on a human level? Are you guys best blogging buddies? Tell me in the comments below.

Great tips. Learning to write what people wanted to read and not just what I wanted to write about was a big one for me. Once I figured that out, I started struggling with ever writing because I only wrote what other people wanted to read. I stopped enjoying my own blog which made it difficult to work on it. I finally figured out how to balance it by writing two posts a week about what others wanted to read and one post about what I wanted to write.

Yes, I’ve struggled with that too! Like Haley said in another comment, finding a niche that you’re passionate about and an audience that matches your passion is key. I actually had to change what was I was writing about because I felt like people weren’t into what I was passionate about. I think you’ve found a great balance on your blog, keep it up girl!

This is great! I think the balance between writing what you are passionate about and writing ‘what people want to read’ is a delicate one. I think it is important to know your target audience – one that matches your passions and desires because if you are just looking to write what people want to read on any given day, burn out is inevitable. I guess that is the artist in me though. I think it is both/and… not just one or the other. <3

That is soo true Haley! You will definitely burn out if the topic is not something you’re passionate about. Great point!

Very true Amanda! I’ve realized, both in my own writing and that of other bloggers, the best content is the content that really connects with your readers on that human level.

Thanks so much for sharing and I’m impressed with the growth of your blog! I’ll have to jump over and join your Facebook group.
