Bloggers always want more. More followers. More comments. More likes. And, above all, more traffic.

A year ago, I was getting about 1,000 page views a month. Which was pretty good for a one-month-old blog. But I knew I needed more.

And I had heard that Pinterest was a great platform for getting more traffic. So I listened to a bazillion podcasts about Pinterest. I read blog posts on Pinterest until my eyes burned.

I admit it, I got a little Pinterest obsessed.

But after 3 weeks of Pinterest learning, my page views grew from 1,000 to 3,000. And then they doubled the next month.  (This was all with less than 100 followers, by the way.)

And the best thing about it? It’s all automated, so I don’t have to do anything to keep getting traffic from it.

So…are you ready to learn the steps I took to make Pinterest a blog traffic machine?

Create Beautiful Branded Graphics

The first thing you MUST do to get traffic from Pinterest is create branded graphics that make people’s eyes pop out of their head.

Make sure that they’re the right size for Pinterest – 736 x 1102. Long, vertical graphics are way more likely to be repinned.

They should include your post headline, your logo, and your branding. And they should also stand out with a killer headline.

Check out this Mini-Course from Andrea Beltrami on how to create beautiful branded graphics.

At first it can be a little difficult to re-create all those super amazing pictures you see on Pinterest–don’t worry about. Keep practicing and eventually you’ll get to be that good too.

3 Easy Steps to Creating AMAZING Pinterest Photos

  1. Select a light and beautiful image from Pexels or Pixabay. It’s been shown that the most popular Pinterest photos have elements of red and are faceless. With Pexels, you can download a custom size which makes it easy to get the idea 736 x 1102 Pinterest size.
  2. Edit the image using the free software Picmonkey and Canva. For a small additional fee you can get amazing graphics from Canva and beautiful fonts from Picmonkey.
  3. Use at least two types of contrasting font that is clear and easy to see. Type out your title, an optional tagline, and your blog’s url. Make the words clear and easy to see. Sometimes you have to put an overlay (using Picmonkey) on the photo so that you can see the words more easily.

That’s it!

Go back and create branded graphics for all of your posts. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Create a blog post board for your blog

Make a board just for your blog posts titled “Best of…”, and then pin all of your posts there first.

That way, when you repin them, your blog post board will get more repins, which looks better and makes it rank higher in Pinterest.

Also, it makes it easier for visitors to see all your great content in one place!

Join group boards

Group boards are the BOMB.COM!

Why? Because Pinterest is the only social media site where board owners can allow other people to share content with their followers.

If you become a contributor to a group board that has 50K followers, your pins will now be sent to 50K followers! How awesome is that?

Unless you have a lot of Pinterest followers, the best way to get eyes on your pins is to join group boards. Not just any board, but boards that many pinners share and pin to on a regular basis.

There are many ways of joining group boards, but to start out, go to pingroupie.com and search for boards in your niche. Sort by the boards with the most repins, because group boards won’t help you if people aren’t repinning stuff.

You’ll have to follow the directions listed in the description of the Pinterest board. Usually it’ll have an email and/or other instructions to follow.

If the board doesn’t have any info, the owner is the first contributor on the board. Follow them, their board, and try to find an email to contact them. Tell them a little about yourself, promise to follow their rules, that you’ll only post amazing content and ask if you can become a contributor on the board.

How to be a good board contributor

  1. Make sure to read the rules if any and follow them to a “T”. If they say only pin one post per day, do so!
  2. Don’t add contributors to a board that you didn’t start. That’s just rude!
  3. Only post relevant stuff. Don’t pin your latest recipe post to a group board about making money online.
  4. DON’T BE A SPAMMER – nuff’ said!

Use Boardbooster to automatically repin your posts.

Boardbooster is a great( and cheap)tool that will repin your old pins to group boards. You can set it to loop your pins on a schedule that you choose.

Boardbooster has definitely been an essential tool in my Pinterest toolbox!

Boardbooster is the best way to get people’s eyes on your old posts. For a post on how to use Boardbooster to loop your pins, click here.

In Conclusion…

This simple process WILL get you more traffic. But only if you know who your audience is, join the right group boards, and create a droolworthy brand with your graphics.

Get those things in place, do the 4 steps above, and your blog will have more traffic than downtown Miami during rush hour.

Thank you for this. Huge thank you for this. I had no idea that faceless images were the bomb on Pinterst. I guess my big question is this – the images I create for my blog posts are 1200×630 because that’s the ideal size for FB. Should I be creating a separate image for Pinterest?

That’s actually what I do. I create two images for each blog post.

Well done for increasing you traffic. I would be excited to reach 1000 visitors a month. Yes, Pinterest is fantastic. For a long time I didn’t get started with Pinterest. I have now. I could be more active than I am. Thats a goal for the future.
