Looking for a way to earn money online? This is how to create a digital product that people actually want!

Many of you are probably familiar with the concept of selling digital products online. People are self-publishing books, creating extensive courses, doing webinars, and the list goes on and on!

These infopreneurs, as coined by Regina from byregina.com, are paired off into two groups—one group that sells thousands of products, are super popular online, and are wildly profitable, and the other group full of online entrepreneurs that nobody buys from.

So how do we get into the first group?

By creating products that people actually want.

How to Figure Out What People Want

As my first business coach said, never make ANY business decisions without consulting other people first.

At first, this comment sounded really weird to me. Who am I supposed to ask and how am I supposed to find these people when I want to create a digital product? The entire reason I’m out here trying to create stuff is to be known online!

But…we actually have it backwards. Many digital creators believe, if I create something, and IF it’s good enough, people will totally be into it!

That’s just wrong and you’re setting yourself up for a major let down.

First you have to find your people, your tribe, the folks that you vibe with. You’re going to find these people by just roaming online into forums, social media, and other online communities.

Once you find them, start asking them what their biggest issues are. Get to know them on a personal level.

Collab with other bloggers, and get to know them on a personal level (you’ll probably learn a thing or two too!).

This is something that is going to take a lot of time because you are building relationships. No it’s not easy but it’s the first and most crucial step to building a profitable blogging business, then you will need to think about customer care.

Once you start surveying people, keep a log or spreadsheet of your results. Look at other blogs in your niche and see what kind of products they’re selling.

Maybe buy some of these products to see how they’re set up. No you’re not going to be copying them, but maybe you see what type of platform or online service they use that you didn’t know about.

Maybe the way that they separate their courses out or the way their landing page is set up is particularly effective.

You want to take all these things into account when you are thinking about what and how you’re going to create for your first product.

You can run a challenge on Facebook or Twitter and get an email list going. Or maybe you can start your own Facebook group before you even begin a blog! Once you have a small community going, ask them what it is that they need.

Creating Your First Product

After you have a pretty good idea of the issues people have, work on creating a solution for it. As noted in my article about creating a sales funnel, you’re going to have an introductory offer and a core offer.

Videos and video courses have a pretty high value so you can use these as product ideas for both your core and introductory offers.

Now when you’re done creating your product, you’re going to have to promote it like crazy to get people to buy it. One great way to set yourself up for success is to build an audience for your product before you release it. Some people pre-sell their products before they even create it! This is the best way to validate an idea for a product. A really great way to push out your first product is to build momentum for it. You can throw a challenge around your product and then offer the product to your participants.

One really popular way is to throw a live webinar speaking on the issue that your product is solving and then offering your product at the end of the webinar. I have not yet done a webinar yet but I’ve heard that they are a great way to convert readers into customers.

So basically, to create products that people want we are going to:

  1. Network, network, network! We’re going to be consistently active online. We’re going to talk to people, build relationships, and ask them what their biggest issues are.
  2. After months of gathering data and building relationships, we’re going to create our first product based off the needs of our online community
  3. Throw a challenge or a webinar teaching our online community about their issue and then offer our product at the end.

It’s a lot of work but it’s totally worth it to build a blogging business that’s actually going to make an impact! What do you think? Have you created any online products? If so, how did it go and what tactics did you use to promote it?
