Is it time to grow your email list? This is the one thing that guarantees subscribers before you even create one!
Is it time to grow your email list? This is the one thing that guarantees subscribers before you even create one!

Note: Some links in this post contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase. That’s actually one of the ways you make money blogging! Thanks for supporting my blogging dreams! 🙂

You started a new blog, set up an opt-in like everyone told you to, and then waited…

You realize after a couple of months that you only have 50 people on your email list and maybe 100 page views per day if you’re lucky.

You’re confused because everyone is telling you that to be successful as a blogger you have to build this tribe, create products, and a huge email list to sell to…but no one really tells you how to do these things.

Sure there are some bloggers who are amazing and go into intricate details about how to create a tribe of readers, create products, and tell you how to make money from your blog for FREE (like Regina from byregina.com and Jenn from jennscalia.com) but these bloggers are far and few in-between.

Most bloggers are going to give you the most basic high level information and then try to upsell you on a product to get the good stuff. I’m not mad at them—they are running a business after all, and a business does need money to survive, there is a reason why a trustworthy payday loan company is very essential in these occasions.

But as a blogger who KNOWS how hard it is to figure stuff out that you don’t know (does that make sense?), I really want to help other bloggers get it a bit quicker.

How I went from 45 subscribers to 330 subscribers in one month

I started really trying to grow my list in November of 2015. I already had about 30 or so subscribers that were trickling in from Twitter. I wrote a small ebook on how to start a freelancing business in one week and created a landing page for it. Then I took the link for the landing page and set it up so that every time someone on Twitter follows me they would get this DM (direct message) with the link to my ebook.

That landing page has a conversion rate of about 50% which is really high, but I didn’t have that much traffic going to the landing page to really make a difference.

I knew at this rate that it would take FOREVER to build the subscriber list I needed to make my business successful so I had to find another way.

Enter Facebook Groups…

Honestly Facebook groups have changed my blogging world for the better because I’m suddenly surrounded by people who are doing the same thing that I’m doing, and everyone is so helpful and nice!

I’ve made some really great blogging relationships, learned SOO MUCH for free and I’ve even started creating my own tribe!

So, one day I’m in Cassie’s Babes In Business Facebook Group and I see this lady offer a free Facebook group post planner.  I’m like hmm…I could really use that!! So I tell the poster and she gives me a planner that she created in an Excel spreadsheet. Now the spreadsheet was nice but what was so remarkable was that like 50-60 people asked for this spreadsheet!! She in turn invited us to join this Facebook group and a challenge.

What took me more than a month to do she had done in one day! A lightbulb went off in my head…

Now the lady’s Facebook Group post planner was nice but it wasn’t useful for me because I post in like 10 Facebook groups and hers was set up for just 3. So I created my own and offered it in a few of my Facebook groups.

I had over 100 people sign up for my email list just from something that took me 30 minutes to create!!

Also, I saw other people throw these challenges and people were signing up! So I decided one day, I’m going to throw a blogging challenge. Never done anything like this in my life—came up with all the rules on the fly and lo and behold I have nearly 150 people added to my list just from this challenge!

So how do you guarantee that people will sign up before you create a subscribers list?

Create something that they want. How do you figure that out? You ask them! Where do you go to ask them? Facebook groups!

Seriously, it’s that easy. Go to some of your fav Facebook Groups and ask people, “Hey would you like it if I did/created _______? “  And guess what? People will tell you!

Sometimes no one will respond, and sometimes you’ll have over 100 people respond, waiting excitedly for whatever you’re going to create. This helps build momentum for your free gift.

And believe me…this will put some fire under your butt to create whatever it is they want that day so that you can add them to your community.

Throwing challenges and giving away things is the way that Jenn Scalia built her email list to thousands and thousands of people. She now has a thriving community and as a result, a thriving business!

So I want to encourage all of you to go to your favorite Facebook Group and ask, “What resource can I create to make your life easier?”

Create it, and then watch the people come to you!

Thank you for reading day 5 of my blogging challenge! Make sure to post your article in the Facebook group and if you haven’t joined my blogging challenge yet and would like to be a part of it, check this out!

What kind of challenges? I find that this advice is much more easily integrated by blogger who blog about blogging. I’m a lifestyle blogger, so it wouldn’t really make sense to entice my readers with blog related freebies. I’ve really been struggling to find other lifestyle bloggers that offer a freebie to get people to sign up to their email list. Do you know of any or have any ideas of freebies I could create?

Hey! I don’t have the link to this lady’s blog but there was this lifestyle blogger that blogged about fitness, healthy recipes, etc. and she did a weight loss challenge where people put money in a pot and whoever lost the most fat won the money. She actually makes money off of this as well. You can definitely do this with lifestyle blogging. I actually think its easier for you guys because you’re covering so many topics. I just visited your latest post about buying 60 meals for $250. Why not do a saving challenge? People are always into setting financial goals? Tbh your blog looks like its a personal finance blog because you talk about how to live well on less money. There’s so many challenges (pay-off debt challenges, no spending for a week challenges, saving money challenges, substituting items for lower-priced items, etc.) you can do with a personal finance blog. Check out two of my favs – http://thekrazycouponlady.com/ and http://www.moneyunder30.com/ . Hope that helps!

You gave some awesome tips here that I had not thought of. It can be a struggle finding a good lead magnet. Most people these days are tired of ebooks, so offering something that they really would want I feel will render better results. Thanks for sharing. Now I need to figure out what I can provide as my blog is related to affiliate marketing/make money from home.
